Lenten Pilgrimage

Looking for a deeper, more meaningful life? Join us as we journey together on a Lenten Pilgrimage.

Lent is a time for stepping aside from our workday busyness,
a time for engaging in reflection,
a time for listening for the voice of God in our lives,

a time for opening a space in our lives for the movement of the Spirit,

a time for renewal.

First Plymouth invites you to come together with others, and take a Lenten pilgrimage in community.  We offer several paths for you to explore, including learning, contemplation, Bible study and music.  Choose the path(s) that appeals most to you, and come along with us on the journey to a deeper life!

Befriending the Soul:  A Celtic Lenten Journey: Class led by Jane Anne Ferguson

Spiritual Direction:  Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith:  Class led by George Anastos

Class Descriptions:

Studying The Heart of Christianity Again for the First Time:  This class, facilitated by Doug Brown, will read and discuss the book “The Heart of Christianity,” by theologian Marcus Borg.  We will delve into such topics as the Bible, God, Jesus, sin, and how to live in a multi-faith, pluralistic society.  Borg conveys the essence of Christianity in an exciting, new way that does justice to those who do not share his views and will greatly enrich the understanding of those who do. Participants should buy their own copy of the book; the book is available in bookstores and on line, and a few copies will be available for purchase the first day of class.  Meets in  Covenant Room.

Practicing Divine Image:  Artists and poets are among the life-guides who help us pay attention to the momentary glimpses of holy mystery that manifest themselves everywhere, reflections of God hidden in plain sight. They help us know and name the holy mystery within ourselves.  Led by Andrea La Sonde Anastos, we will use the art, poetry, and wisdom in the Lent-Easter issue of Behold as a resource for contemplation and self-reflection. This class will be use heart as well as head, senses as much as reason.  Each participant will need a copy of Behold, which will be available for purchase for $9.00. Because we must pre-order these booklets, participants must sign up for this class by February 4; please email Andrea to sign up.  Meets in Commons Room.

Bible Basics and Beyond:  Bible Basics and Beyond is a year-long course, but each unit is self-contained, so you can show up as the spirit moves you. Inviting adults into a new adventure of learning, we explore biblical people, events, ideas, and places through reading, reflection, discussion, creative expression, and discovery.  We use the Kerygma Program “Discovering the Bible” as our guide.  During Lent the chapter titles are The Kingdom, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection, The Spirit, The Mission, and The Journey.  Come join our lively discussions.   Meets in room 212.

Bible Workbench:  Bible Workbench is a lectionary--based class that meets throughout the church year, but welcomes participants at all times.   Led by lay-facilitators, we ask questions about how the inner meaning of a text might be active in today’s world and how it might have personal meaning.  The mission of Bible Workbench is to equip people to become interpreters of life and to enable to decipher the meaning of their own experience.  Meets in Columbine Room.

Disciple Bible study: Do you want to know more about the Bible?  Why not join us for a journey through the Christian scriptures?  Our discussions are led by Eric Smith, and no prior familiarity with the Bible is necessary. Come find out what's in there!

Lenten Organ Concerts:  Throughout the season of Lent, First Plymouth will host a series of premier organists from the greater Denver area in concert each Tuesday evening. These performances are designed to move listeners deeper into the experience of the Lenten season.

Befriending the Soul; A Celtic Lenten Journey: The ancient Irish had a concept of friendship they named anam cara, soul friend.  The soul friend connection was sacred one.  Irish poet, priest and philosopher, John O’Donahue describes it saying, “A friend is a loved one who awakens your life in order to free the wild possibilities within you.”  We long for soul friend connections with others and with the Divine. However, as O’Donahue writes “you can never love another … unless you are equally involved in the beautiful but difficult spiritual work of learning to love yourself.”  Using his book, Anam Cara; A Book of Celtic Wisdom, this class will explore the wild possibilities of being a friend with our own souls which house the light of God within us.   Drawing on her sabbatical pilgrimage experience, Rev. Jane Anne Ferguson will lead this class as we seek together the deepest mystery of friendship with our own souls through prayer and meditation, discussion and creative expression. Participants should buy their own copy of the book; the book is available in bookstores and on line, and a few copies will be available for purchase the first day of class.  Meets in the Commons Room.

Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith:  In this experiential course, led by George Anastos, we will delve into spiritual direction using the book, “Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith,” by Henri Nouwen.  The goal of spiritual direction is spiritual formation — the ever-increasing capacity to live a spiritual life from the heart – a capacity nourished by the practice of spiritual disciplines. During this Lenten time of journey we will examine, both from the head and the heart, the three classic disciplines known as the discipline of the Heart, the discipline of the Book, and the discipline of the community of faith.  Participants should buy their own copy of the book; the book is available in bookstores and on line, and a few copies will be available for purchase the first day of class.   Meets in the Covenant Room.

Sundays, 10:10 a.m.
Bible Basics and Beyond will use the Kerygma guide "Discovering the Bible". While this is a year long course, each unit is self-contained so you can show up as the spirit moves you. "Discovering the Bible" is an introduction to the bible as a whole. Inviting adults into a new adventure of learning, the course explores biblical people, events, ideas and places, through reading, reflection, discussion, creative expression and discovery. You do not need to be a Bible scholar to come to Bible Basics & Beyond. We have a full range of people from novices to scholars. Come with a willingness to learn and to join our lively discussions.

Bible Workbench brings the weekly lectionary text alive, asking open-ended questions to take you out of your head and into your heart. It promotes reflection, appreciation of diverse perspectives, and real-world application of the text. The only requirements are an open heart and an open mind - no previous Bible knowledge needed.

Contemporary Issues will study the history of the United Church of Christ during November. Who were those Pilgrims, anyway, and what do they have to do with who we are now? What about all our other denominational ancestors who helped make the UCC what it is today? For the answers to these and other questions, join our Senior Minister Emeritus, Rev. Stuart Haskins for a three-week pilgrimage through the history of our denomination.
