Upcoming Worship Services: March 14 - Fourth Sunday in Lent Blessings on the Journey The Rev. Jane Anne Ferguson 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 This short passage from Paul’s second letter to the church at Corinth holds rich imagery for living into the calling of Christ in contemporary times. And Paul proclaims that living into this calling brings new life! …if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! What are the implications of this proclamation for First Plymouth at this crucial juncture in our history? How do we claim the promise of becoming a new creation in Christ? Join us this Sunday to discover the promise in community with one another! March 21 - Fifth Sunday in Lent The Rev. George Anastos and Sue Lee Isaiah 43:16-21 As I listen to the many criticisms of contemporary religion, I am often struck by their common theme that the Church is out of touch - it has little to say to contemporary culture, and when it speaks it seeks to move culture backward to a time which exists only if we look through rose-colored glasses. The criticisms are often (but certainly not always) justified. For the Judeo-Christian tradition this is deeply ironic. Biblically speaking, God is, well, still speaking. As today's lesson proclaims, "I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" In other words, the very institutions that resist the new are called to proclaim what is new, and yet…so, just what new things are being done? By God? By the Church? By us? Also today, church member Sue Lee will be sharing a bit of her spiritual journey with us. March 28 - Cloak Sunday The Rev. George Anastos Luke 19:28-40 Yes, that is "cloak" or "coat" Sunday. It is quite deliberately NOT "Palm" Sunday. What?!!? Not Palm Sunday? Well, not when we are reading the story from Luke, who does not include palms in his story. So, when celebrating Jesus's "triumphal" entry into Jerusalem, it is a significant misnomer to call it "Palm" Sunday when using Luke's account. This is theologically no small thing. Luke had very specific reasons for this and we will explain it during the service. HOWEVER, we will bring coats! Yes! Please go through your closets and bring any coat that you no longer wear. We will be giving these to agencies in Denver that minister to the homeless and hurting.
