Upcoming Worship Services:
September 5 - Service of Holy Communion - The Rev. George Anastos, Jeremiah 18:1-11
I had the revelatory privilege once of watching a potter who was so far beyond skilled that she could only be called an artist. She "threw" clay on the wheel and then began to shape and mold it, using gestures that looked so simple and easy and yet could only be accomplished by years, decades even, of loving attention. I commented to her that what she was doing was so, well, "intimate." And she graciously said something to the effect of, "Of course this is intimate. I am pouring my focus, my desire, my love, my soul into this. Creation from love is always intimate."
There are moments when some new awareness or comprehension slides into place, when the world shifts just a little bit and we see with new eyes. She gave me that gift that day as she destroyed what she was making, and threw the clay again.

September 12 - Community Camp Day - The Rev. George Anastos and Alice Ellis, Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28
The theme of this fun-filled Sunday will be "Community Under Construction." Using the paradoxically disquieting and hopeful words of Jeremiah, we will celebrate what it means to be a community gathering in God's name, guided by the Word made flesh among us, and sustained by the Holy Spirit. Alice Ellis will give a brief talk about the presence of God in her life; we will baptize a young adult; Eva Heller will speak of her upcoming mission trip to Venezuela; and we have a day of learning and festivity planned – to help us build a wondrous sense of being beloved community all together.

September 19 - Building Trust - The Rev. George Anastos, Jer. 8:18 – 9:1
In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven Covey speaks of the reality of the "emotional bank accounts" in our lives. Like an account at a bank, trust with another takes time to build up, slowly making deposits and more slowly earning interest. One of the points that Covey makes is that it takes a long time to build up a substantial account of trust but that it can take only a moment for it to drawn to zero…or below. Trust is hard and it requires work and will, desire and determination, forgiveness and grace.
Like any relationship, God's relationship with us, and ours with God, takes time. And as with any relationship, something can happen that can strain that relationship to near-bankruptcy. And that is where grace comes in.

September 26 - The Rev. Dr. Cathie Kelsey, Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15
We're going to use a story to think about our stories: Our choices big and small are investments in our future and the future of creation. The story in Jeremiah 32 will invite us to think about what kind of future are we investing in - in relationships, for instance. And it will invite us to use the theological concept of "the single eternal divine decree" to re-imagine our relationship to the whole of creation in a way that gives us purpose and hope.
Rev. Dr. Cathie Kelsey, Dean of the Chapel at Iliff School of Theology, says she loves what theology can do to clear away images of God that get in the way of deeper relationship with God. She hopes every sermon she preaches does that - including on September 26!
