Youth News

Word from Eric...

Understandably, our church has recently spent a lot of time talking about what might be going wrong. We’ve faced budget challenges, staff layoffs, and reductions in what we’re able to give to outside organizations. But it never hurts to pause and think about what’s going right. In youth group,

  • We have 50-60 active youth, which means as many as 1 in 5 active First Plymouth members is between 6th and 12th grade. (This assumes 300 active adult members, which is one estimate that gets thrown around).
  • Our average attendance is up around 30, and we’ve had as many as 46 people at youth group on one night.
  • 35 of us traveled to New Orleans last summer, to help rebuild homes destroyed in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  • We raised over $2,000 in three weeks of fundraising for Haiti relief.
  • We collected food for the Can-Do Cart on Super Bowl Sunday.
  • We went on the SpiritLife Retreat, where we learned new spiritual practices.
  • As a youth group, we’ve contributed to the Second Wind Fund and the Denver Inner City Parish.
  • We rearranged the Loft, and acquired funding to do even more.
  • We provide beautiful music through the youth choir’s participation in Sunday worship, and the youth planned and led two Sundays’ worth of services last year (Youth Sunday and Mission Trip Sunday).
  • We continue to have fun, love each other, and love God!

So remember, in all the talk of what might not be going so well….some things are going great! Let’s keep it going!
See you Sunday,

Eric Smith, Youth Director
